STREET FOOD IN ATHENS

What to do after you’ve visited the Parthenon and the Ancient Agora? Eat like a local.

O KOSTAS

A hole-in-the wall souvlaki joint to get your fix of quality Greek street food. O Kostas is very small and very simple. The best combo.

Avli Tip: Order the fresh beef and pork souvlaki and sit outside on the small, quirky patio.

HOOCUT

Hoocut is the brainchild of acclaimed chefs Periklis Koskinas, Manos Zournatzis, and Spyros and Vagelis Liakos. They combine their cooking artistry with fast and tasty street food.

Avli Tip: You can’t go wrong with anything here–the team even gets adventurous with their pita sandwiches. Dolmas Vegetarian and Squid? Yep, on the menu.

LUKUMADES

A Greek street food staple. Loukoumades are simple, bite-sized dough balls served with warm honey and cinnamon. Enjoy classic and re-invented takes at this must-try Athens shop.

Avli Tip: Sweet tooth? Try the Strawberry Chocolate. Prefer something Savory? Go for the Feta Lover, filled with feta cheese & topped with pepper honey.

ARISTON ATHENS

Since 1910, Ariston has been tucked into the very busy Voulis Street, right behind the Syntagma Square, and is the place to go to satisfy your pie craving in Athens. Pie options include feta and leek, feta and zucchini, mushroom, and even a farmer’s pie filled with different vegetables.

Avli Tip: Go after shopping on Ermou Street for the tyropita (τυρόπιτα), a cheese-pie.

BOUGATSADIKO PSIRRI

Bougatsa is a traditional Greek dessert made with creamy custard wrapped in golden brown crispy phyllo. One of the best spots to find this speciality is Bougatsadiko Psirri. It’s open year round on a busy pedestrian square with plenty of people watching opportunities.

Avli Tip: The bougatsa is always fresh and you can even pop-in, sit, and watch how the famous bougatsa is made.

GLIKO KAMINADA

Gliko Kaminada does dessert right. Stop by for baked dough rolls with caramel coating and endless garnishes. While this famous dessert hails from Budapest, these sweet treats have made a name for themselves in Athens, and will leave you wanting more.

Avli Tip: You can’t go wrong with the classic, Hazelnut Chocolate Praline & Biscuit.

KOULOURI - AROUND EVERY STREET CORNER

Koulouri is a traditional sesame-coated ring of bread that’s very much a part of Greek culture. It’s perfect for an on-the-go bite or accompaniment to your morning routine. Athens is filled with vendors serving this around every bustling corner, so don’t be surprised if you make this snack a part of your daily agenda.

Avli Tip: Kick off your morning with a walk around Athens to pick-up a Koulouri and a Greek frappe.

FEYROUZ

Feyrouz, a Turkish-Lebanese snack shop, was founded in 2014 to offer a different and modern street food option in the center of bustling Athens. Feyrouz is guided by the philosophy of a la carte cuisine that’s quality, fast, and delicious.

Avli Tip: Order their version of Peinirli (Greek pizza). Full of vegetable fillings from the Levantine tradition. We couldn’t pick just one.

AMYGDALO

Nuts. Chocolate. Coffee. If you need a quick bite and a pick-me-up…stop here. It’s small & cozy but it’s fairytale decor will enchant you from the moment you step inside.

Avli Tip: Grab a coffee and a few handmade chocolates to-go while strolling through Athens. Also, the lemonade is crazy delicious if you’re in the mood for something more refreshing.
